Food poisoning shivers

Short answer

Food poisoning shivers can occur as the body responds to infection or fever, but they can also signal dehydration or a more serious illness.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Possible explanation
Fever response or fluid loss
Helpful check
Measure temperature and monitor urine
Urgent sign
Shivers with confusion or faintness

Why shivering may happen

Shivering is rapid muscle activity that produces heat. During food poisoning, it may accompany a rising fever as the immune system responds to a germ. Chills can also feel stronger after vomiting or diarrhoea, when fluid loss leaves you weak and cold. Shivers alone do not identify the cause; look at the whole picture, including fever, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and alertness.

Comfort and hydration

Check your temperature if you can, rest, and use light layers or a blanket for comfort without overheating. Sip oral rehydration solution regularly, especially after each episode of vomiting or diarrhoea. Take fluids slowly if nausea is present. Avoid alcohol and do not share food or utensils while ill. A pharmacist or clinician can advise about fever relief after reviewing your age, health conditions and current medicines.

When shivers are urgent

Seek urgent care if shivers are intense or persistent, or occur with confusion, faintness, breathing difficulty, severe abdominal pain, blood, repeated vomiting, very little urine or a concerning fever. Contact a clinician promptly if you cannot drink, symptoms are getting worse, or the person affected is very young, older, pregnant or medically vulnerable. IV fluid therapy may be needed for significant dehydration.

Questions to ask

Ask whether the shivers fit with your temperature and fluid status, which fever medicine is safe for you, and whether you need an examination or further tests.

Questions people ask

Do shivers always mean food poisoning is severe?

No. Shivers can accompany fever, but their severity and other symptoms determine whether urgent assessment is needed.

What should I drink with shivers and diarrhoea?

Take frequent small sips of an oral rehydration solution to replace fluid and salts lost through diarrhoea or vomiting.
