Food poisoning shivers

Shivering is rapid muscle activity that produces heat. During food poisoning, it may accompany a rising fever as the immune system responds to a germ. Chills can also feel stronger after vomiting or diarrhoea, when fluid loss leaves you weak and cold. Shivers alone do not identify the cause; look at the whole picture, including fever, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and alertness.

Check your temperature if you can, rest, and use light layers or a blanket for comfort without overheating. Sip oral rehydration solution regularly, especially after each episode of vomiting or diarrhoea. Take fluids slowly if nausea is present. Avoid alcohol and do not share food or utensils while ill. A pharmacist or clinician can advise about fever relief after reviewing your age, health conditions and current medicines.

Seek urgent care if shivers are intense or persistent, or occur with confusion, faintness, breathing difficulty, severe abdominal pain, blood, repeated vomiting, very little urine or a concerning fever. Contact a clinician promptly if you cannot drink, symptoms are getting worse, or the person affected is very young, older, pregnant or medically vulnerable. IV fluid therapy may be needed for significant dehydration.
