What should you know about food panel blood test?

Short answer
A food panel blood test can screen selected food reactions, but a result needs clinical context before guiding your diet.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the test may mean
A panel usually combines several blood measurements in one request. Depending on the test, it may look for antibodies associated with immediate allergy or markers used when a clinician is investigating a particular digestive problem. A detected reaction does not always explain symptoms, and a normal result cannot rule out every food-related problem. Food allergy, food intolerance, coeliac disease and inflammatory bowel conditions are assessed in different ways; read more about coeliac disease and Crohn's Disease when those possibilities are being considered.
The food list matters. A broad panel may include foods you rarely eat while missing a food that is relevant to your history. Your symptoms, timing, examination and other tests help determine whether a result is meaningful.
How to prepare and use the result
Ask the requesting clinician whether you need to fast, pause any medicine, or bring a record of meals and symptoms. Do not remove many foods solely because a report marks them as reactive; unnecessary restriction can make eating difficult and may affect nutrition. Keep eating your usual diet unless a clinician has given a specific safety instruction.
Take the report to a qualified clinician who can match each finding with your history. If an allergy is suspected, they may discuss a focused test, supervised food challenge or an alternative explanation. Seek tailored advice before changing a child's diet or your diet during pregnancy.
When symptoms need prompt help
Get emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives after eating. Arrange medical assessment for repeated vomiting, blood in stool, ongoing weight loss, marked tiredness, or persistent abdominal symptoms. These features need assessment rather than interpretation of a panel alone; anaemia and chronic kidney disease can also cause symptoms that require separate evaluation.
Questions to ask
Which foods and markers are included, and what question is this panel meant to answer? Does my history fit an allergy, intolerance or another condition? Should I keep eating the tested foods? What result would change the next step?

Questions people ask
Can a food panel identify every food problem?
No. Different food reactions require different assessments, and the panel only covers the foods and markers included.
Should I start an elimination diet after a positive result?
Discuss it first with a clinician, especially if several foods are flagged or the diet change involves a child.
