What a stomach bug does
A stomach bug usually refers to Gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach and bowel that can cause diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, fever, and Loss of Appetite. Rotavirus Infection is one possible cause. Fluid and salts can be lost through vomiting and diarrhoea, which can lead to Dehydration. Appetite may stay low for a while, so hydration and gradual eating are more useful goals than finishing a full meal.
Eating and drinking while recovering
Take small, frequent sips of water or oral rehydration fluid. If vomiting follows a drink, pause briefly and restart with smaller sips. Once fluids stay down, try rice, toast, potatoes, bananas, soup, crackers, or other plain foods you tolerate. Continue feeding children in small amounts and keep breast or usual milk feeds unless a clinician advises otherwise. Avoid alcohol and very fatty meals while symptoms are active. Wash hands with soap and water and avoid preparing food for others while unwell.
When to seek care
Seek medical advice if vomiting prevents drinking, diarrhoea continues, or symptoms are worsening rather than easing. Get urgent help for blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, fainting, confusion, unusual sleepiness, or dehydration signs such as a dry mouth and very little urine. Infants, older adults, and people with long-term conditions may need earlier assessment. Fever with a severe headache or stiff neck also needs urgent attention.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which rehydration product is suitable, when to restart regular foods, and whether your symptoms need testing or treatment. Ask how to protect vulnerable household members from infection.
