Food blood test

The requested blood work depends on the question. It may assess blood cells, iron-related findings, kidney function, inflammation, infection or antibodies linked with conditions such as coeliac disease. The sample is usually taken from a vein and sent for the markers chosen by your clinician. A result outside the usual range is a clue, not a diagnosis on its own.

Food symptoms can arise from allergy, intolerance, infection, medication effects or bowel conditions. A normal result does not rule out every possibility, and a test for coeliac disease may be less useful if gluten has already been removed from the diet. Do not make major dietary changes before discussing the plan.

Tell the clinic about supplements, medicines, recent illness, travel, dietary restrictions and family history. Ask whether fasting is needed and whether you should continue your usual diet. Record pain, bowel changes, weight change, fatigue, fever and the relationship to meals. Results are interpreted with an examination and, when needed, stool tests, scans or referral.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for blood in stool, severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, marked dehydration, persistent fever or unexplained weight loss. Seek emergency help for collapse, confusion or difficulty breathing. These symptoms need clinical assessment rather than waiting for routine blood results.
