Folliculitis under the arm

The underarm is warm, moist, and exposed to movement and rubbing. Shaving can irritate follicle openings, while deodorant or fragranced products may aggravate already sensitive skin. Folliculitis may look like red or pus-filled pimples, but a painful lump deeper in the skin can have another cause. One-sided, repeated, or scarring lumps deserve a clinical examination.

Stop shaving and waxing until the bumps settle, wash gently, and pat dry rather than rubbing. Wear loose, breathable clothing and change after sweating. Avoid squeezing, fragranced products, and thick occlusive creams on the affected area. Use a clean personal razor when hair removal resumes, and replace it if the blade is dull. A clinician can recommend treatment if infection is suspected.

Arrange an appointment if the bumps persist, recur, drain, become deep, or leave scars. Seek prompt care for fever, chills, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, or swelling that limits arm movement. Do not assume every underarm lump is folliculitis; persistent nodules need assessment.

Ask whether shaving, deodorant, or friction may be contributing, which products are suitable, and whether the lump needs a different evaluation.
