Folliculitis treatment with mupirocin

Folliculitis is inflammation around hair follicles. Mupirocin is applied to the skin to target certain bacteria; it will not treat irritation from friction, an ingrown hair alone, or every yeast-related eruption. A clinician may examine the bumps, check for drainage, and decide whether a topical antibiotic fits the pattern.

Use mupirocin exactly as directed and apply it only to the affected skin. Clean your hands before and after application, keep the area gently clean, and avoid sharing the tube. Do not place it in the eyes, mouth, or inside the nose unless specifically instructed. Reduce shaving, rubbing, tight clothing, and picking while the skin settles. If the area becomes more irritated after application, contact the prescriber.

Arrange medical review if redness spreads, pain becomes marked, pus collects, or several areas develop. Seek prompt care for fever, chills, rapidly worsening swelling, or feeling unwell. A recurrent or deep problem may need a different diagnosis or treatment rather than repeated topical antibiotic use.
