Short answer
Folliculitis treatment may involve gentle skin care, stopping irritation, and prescribed medicine when needed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Common triggers
- Shaving, friction, sweat, and blocked follicles
- Helpful first step
- Gentle cleansing and pausing hair removal
What folliculitis means
Folliculitis is inflammation around a hair follicle. It can look like small red or tender spots, pus-filled bumps, or a cluster of spots around hairs. Shaving, friction, sweat, occlusive clothing, ingrown hairs, and infection can all contribute. The appearance alone does not show which cause is present. Folliculitis can occur on the scalp, face, neck, chest, back, buttocks, or areas that are shaved.
Treatment options
Pause shaving, waxing, and activities that rub the area while it settles. Wash gently, keep the skin dry, change out of sweaty clothing, and avoid squeezing or scrubbing the bumps. A clinician may recommend an antiseptic or a topical medicine when bacteria are suspected; more extensive or persistent infection may need oral treatment. If the pattern suggests yeast, ingrown hairs, or a non-infectious irritation, the treatment is different. When to seek care
Arrange medical advice if the area is spreading, increasingly painful, hot, swollen, draining, or repeatedly returning. Seek prompt care for fever, feeling unwell, rapidly expanding redness, or severe tenderness. A dermatologist can check the follicles and choose treatment that matches the cause, especially when self-care has not helped.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be infection, ingrown hairs, or irritation? Should I stop shaving until it clears? Which cleanser or medicine is suitable for this body area? What signs mean I should return?

Questions people ask
Can folliculitis clear with self-care?
Mild irritation may improve after friction and hair removal stop, but persistent or infected-looking bumps need clinical assessment.
Should I squeeze folliculitis bumps?
No. Squeezing can damage the skin and spread irritation or infection.
