Folliculitis scar treatment: what to know

After folliculitis settles, a flat dark or light mark may remain without a true change in skin texture. A depressed area, raised scar, or firm spot is different and may need a longer assessment. Repeated inflammation, squeezing, and scratching can increase the chance of lasting texture change. A new bump near a mark may represent active folliculitis rather than a scar.

Book an appointment if marks are enlarging, painful, itchy, raised, or repeatedly surrounded by new bumps. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, or rapidly worsening swelling. Active infection should be addressed before elective scar treatment. Tell the clinician about previous reactions, medicines, and any tendency to form raised scars.
