Pityrosporum folliculitis: what to know

The bumps are often small, similar in size, and clustered on the forehead, hairline, chest, shoulders, or upper back. Itch may be more noticeable than tenderness, and ordinary acne treatments may not help. Heat, sweating, occlusive clothing, and oily products can encourage the yeast to overgrow, although the condition is not a sign of poor hygiene.

Bacterial folliculitis, acne, and other rashes can look similar. A clinician may use the distribution, symptoms, and response to treatment to guide the diagnosis rather than relying on one feature.

Keep affected skin cool and dry after sweating, choose breathable clothing, and avoid greasy creams or hair products that spread onto the skin. Cleanse gently without scrubbing or picking. A clinician may recommend an antifungal wash or cream and explain how often it should be used; follow the directions because contact time and treatment length matter.

Antibiotics treat some bacterial infections but do not treat yeast overgrowth. Avoid changing treatment repeatedly without review, especially if the bumps are widespread or recurrent.

Book a dermatology or primary-care review when itchy uniform bumps persist, recur after treatment, or involve several body areas. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, marked swelling, or drainage. Mention pregnancy, immune conditions, and all skin products or medicines when discussing treatment.
