Long-term treatment for folliculitis

Folliculitis may recur when shaving, waxing, friction, sweat, occlusive products, ingrown hairs or a specific infection continues to affect the follicles. Different causes can look alike, and repeated antibiotic use is not appropriate for every flare. Recurrent bumps may also leave dark marks or scars, especially after picking, so the diagnosis matters before choosing a long-term plan.

Record what happens before a flare, including hair removal, exercise, clothing and new products. Use gentle cleansing, change out of sweaty clothes, avoid rubbing and stop picking. Review shaving technique and consider a different hair-removal approach if that is a trigger. A dermatologist may recommend a topical medicine, oral treatment, or another strategy based on the pattern; follow the prescribed course and do not share medicines.

Book a review when episodes keep returning, involve several body areas, leave scars, or fail to respond to a previous plan. Seek prompt care for a rapidly enlarging painful lump, spreading redness, fever, facial swelling or significant drainage. A clinician can check for an abscess, ingrown hairs or another condition and adjust treatment rather than repeatedly treating an uncertain rash.
