Over-the-counter care for folliculitis

Folliculitis is inflammation around a hair follicle. Mild bumps may settle when shaving, waxing, tight clothing, sweat and oily products are reduced. A gentle cleanser and a clean warm compress may be useful. A bump may instead be an ingrown hair, acne or another rash, and an over-the-counter product may not address that cause.

Choose fragrance-free products and follow the label. Avoid scrubbing, picking and applying several new products at once. Do not use leftover prescription antibiotics or share medicines. Products containing antiseptic or acne ingredients can irritate sensitive skin, especially around the eyes, lips or genitals. Ask a pharmacist about the correct product for the body area, allergies, pregnancy or other medicines.

See a clinician if bumps spread, become increasingly painful, contain persistent drainage, return often or do not improve after a short period of gentle care. Get prompt help for fever, rapidly spreading redness, facial or eye swelling, a deep abscess-like lump, or feeling unwell. These signs can require prescription treatment or drainage rather than pharmacy care alone.
