Folliculitis treatment on the vulva: what to know

Folliculitis affects follicles, so it occurs on hair-bearing skin such as the pubic area or outer labia, rather than inside the vagina. Small red or tender bumps may follow shaving, waxing, tight clothing, sweat or rubbing. Ingrown hairs can produce a similar appearance. Burning, unusual discharge, blisters or sores may point to another problem.

Stop shaving or waxing while the bumps are active. Rinse gently, keep the area dry, choose loose breathable underwear and avoid fragranced washes, antiseptics or scrubs. A warm compress can soothe a tender spot. Never squeeze lesions. Do not apply acne products or antibiotic creams inside the vagina; a clinician should recommend any topical antibiotic or oral antibiotic after examining the skin.

Seek medical advice when bumps spread, become very painful, drain repeatedly, recur after hair removal or fail to improve with gentle care. Prompt assessment is needed for fever, rapidly expanding redness, a large deep lump, severe swelling, blisters, ulcers, urinary difficulty or significant vaginal symptoms. These features can require a different examination and treatment.
