Folliculitis on the forearms: what to know

Short answer
Forearm folliculitis is inflammation around arm hair follicles, producing clusters of red, itchy, tender, or pus-filled bumps.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common aggravators
- Sweat, friction, tight sleeves, shaving, and sports equipment
- At home
- Keep skin cool, dry, and free from rough scrubbing
- Get assessed
- For spreading redness, fever, pus, marked warmth, or repeated flares
What may be behind the bumps
Heat, sweat, tight sleeves, sports equipment, shaving, and repeated rubbing can irritate forearm follicles. Bacteria or yeast may be involved, while dry skin and keratosis pilaris can create a different rough, non-infectious pattern. Bumps grouped around hairs, especially after friction or hair removal, support folliculitis but do not establish the cause by themselves.
Scratching and picking can break the skin and spread irritation across nearby follicles. Note whether the area is itchy or painful, whether fluid is present, and whether it began after a new product or activity.
Practical care for the arms
Keep the forearms cool and dry, wash after sweating, and choose loose, breathable sleeves. Stop shaving or waxing the area during a flare and avoid rough scrubs or abrasive brushes. Use a clean towel and do not share razors. If a clinician finds a bacterial infection, they may discuss topical antibiotic therapy or oral antibiotics; those medicines are not suitable for every rash.
Signs to have checked
Arrange medical assessment when redness spreads, bumps become increasingly painful, pus collects, fever develops, or the arm becomes noticeably swollen or warm. Seek review for repeated episodes, scarring, or a rash that does not settle with gentle care. Rapid change after a procedure or injury also warrants prompt advice.
Useful questions
Ask whether the rash is folliculitis or a non-infectious follicular condition, which products and fabrics to avoid, whether hair removal should change, and what symptoms would mean that treatment needs review.

Questions people ask
Can tight clothing cause forearm folliculitis?
Repeated rubbing, trapped sweat, and occlusion from tight sleeves or equipment can irritate follicles and contribute to a flare.
Should you exfoliate forearm folliculitis?
Avoid rough exfoliation while bumps are inflamed because friction can worsen irritation and damage the skin surface.
