Folliculitis near the groin: what to know

Folliculitis is inflammation around a hair follicle. In the groin, heat, sweat, rubbing, tight clothing, shaving and ingrown hairs can irritate follicles. Bacterial or fungal causes are also possible. A groin lump can have another explanation, including an inflamed cyst or hidradenitis, so the pattern, depth and recurrence matter.

Clean gently, dry thoroughly, and choose loose breathable clothing. Change out of damp exercise clothes promptly. Pause shaving and waxing until the skin has settled, and avoid picking or squeezing. Keep personal towels and razors separate. A clinician may recommend Topical Antibiotic Therapy or another treatment after checking whether the bumps are superficial, deep, infected or caused by irritation.

Book an assessment if lesions are recurring, forming scars, draining, spreading, or becoming more painful. Seek urgent care for fever, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, red streaking, or difficulty walking. Do not delay review for a deep groin lump, especially if it is enlarging or not behaving like a small surface bump.
