Folliculitis near the anus: treatment and care

Folliculitis is inflammation around a hair follicle and may cause small tender or pus-filled bumps on nearby hair-bearing skin. Sweat, friction, shaving and occlusive clothing can irritate this area. A bump at the anal opening may instead be a fissure, abscess, haemorrhoid or another condition, so do not assume every lump is folliculitis.

Rinse gently after bowel movements, pat dry, and wear loose breathable underwear. Avoid shaving, fragranced products, vigorous wiping and squeezing. Do not insert creams into the anus unless prescribed for that use. A clinician can decide whether topical care, Topical Antibiotic Therapy, drainage or another approach is appropriate. Keep towels and razors personal.

Obtain prompt assessment for a deep or enlarging lump, throbbing pain, pus, bleeding, warmth, spreading redness or pain when sitting. Seek urgent care for fever, chills, severe pain, rapidly worsening swelling, or difficulty passing stool or urine. Repeated lesions may need evaluation for a different recurring skin condition.

Ask whether the bump is in skin or at the anal opening, which cleanser and medicine are safe, whether an abscess needs treatment, and what symptoms require same-day care.
