Folliculitis and mupirocin: what to know

Folliculitis is inflammation around a hair follicle. It can look like small red bumps, tender spots or pus-filled pimples. Friction, shaving, ingrown hairs and moisture can irritate follicles; bacteria can sometimes contribute. A clinician may examine the pattern before deciding whether an antibiotic is appropriate.

Use mupirocin only as directed, on clean, dry skin, and keep it away from the eyes and inside of the nose unless specifically prescribed for that site. Wash your hands before and after application. Do not share the tube, cover the area tightly, or keep applying it to a different-looking rash without advice. Reduce rubbing, pause shaving over the area, and use a clean towel. Arrange medical review if redness is spreading, pain is increasing, several lesions are developing, or drainage is substantial. Seek urgent care for fever, marked swelling, severe pain, red streaking, or swelling near the eye. If the area is not improving with the prescribed plan or returns repeatedly, the diagnosis and treatment may need reassessment.
