Folliculitis and ingrown hair: what to know

An ingrown hair curls back into the skin instead of growing outward. The trapped hair can irritate the follicle and create an opening for bacteria, leading to folliculitis. Shaving, waxing, friction, and tight clothing can make this more likely. Several bumps may resemble pimples, but their position around hairs is a useful clue. Pause shaving, waxing, or plucking over the affected area until it settles. Wash gently, pat dry, and use a warm, clean compress to soothe the skin. Do not squeeze the bump or dig for the hair, because this can damage the follicle and spread inflammation. Loose clothing can reduce rubbing.
