Can folliculitis occur in the mouth?

Folliculitis is inflammation of a hair follicle. The inner cheeks, gums, tongue, and palate do not contain hair follicles, so a lesion there is not folliculitis. Mouth sores and bumps can follow irritation, a bite, dental rubbing, inflammation, or infection. A spot on the skin beside the lips or beard area is different from a lesion inside the mouth and may be a skin bump or an ingrown hair.

Do not pop, scrape, or burn an oral lesion. Rinse gently with plain water after meals, choose softer foods if chewing hurts, and avoid tobacco, alcohol-containing rinses, and foods that clearly sting the area. Check whether a sharp tooth, brace, or dental appliance is rubbing the spot. A dentist, doctor, or pharmacist can examine the exact site and decide whether it needs treatment. Do not apply skin antibiotics inside the mouth unless a clinician specifically prescribes an oral-use product.

Book an assessment if the lesion persists, repeatedly returns, bleeds, becomes more painful, or makes eating difficult. Seek urgent care if swelling affects breathing or swallowing, swelling spreads quickly, or you feel seriously unwell. A skin bump outside the mouth with redness, warmth, or pus should be assessed separately for possible folliculitis or another infection.
