Folliculitis, furuncles, and carbuncles

Folliculitis often appears as multiple small red or pus-tipped bumps around hairs. A furuncle tends to form a single deeper, firm, painful lump as inflammation extends into nearby tissue. A carbuncle involves connected boils and may have more than one draining point. These conditions can be related, but a skin bump does not establish which one is present. Ingrown Hairs and other Skin Bumps can also mimic early folliculitis.

Keep the area clean and covered with a fresh dressing if it drains. Warm, clean compresses may encourage comfort, but never cut, lance, or squeeze a boil at home. Wash hands after touching the area and do not share towels, clothing, or razors. Reduce rubbing and pause shaving over the lesion. A clinician may need to drain a deeper collection or prescribe Topical Antibiotic Therapy or oral treatment based on its size and appearance.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for a deep or rapidly enlarging lump, spreading redness, severe pain, repeated boils, or drainage that does not settle. Seek urgent help if you have fever, chills, feel very unwell, or the lesion is near the eye or nose. Antibiotics For Skin Infection may be appropriate in some cases, while others need a procedure or different care.

Ask whether the lesion is superficial folliculitis, a furuncle, or a carbuncle; whether it needs drainage; and how to protect household members from contact with drainage. Explain when it began, how quickly it changed, and whether similar lumps have occurred.
