What should you know about folliculitis for years?

Recurring follicle bumps can be linked to grooming, friction, sweat, occlusive products, ingrown hairs, or repeated infection. However, a rash that has lasted years may not be folliculitis at every flare. Scarring, dark marks, deep painful nodules, or lesions in several areas can help a clinician decide whether another inflammatory skin condition is present.

Take photographs during a flare and list locations, triggers, products, medicines, and previous responses. Use gentle cleansing, avoid squeezing, and reduce friction where possible. Do not keep reusing leftover antibiotics or steroid creams without advice. A clinician may tailor topical antibiotic therapy or antibiotics for skin infection only when the examination supports that choice.

Arrange a dermatology assessment for symptoms lasting years, especially with scarring, recurring boils, drainage, or impact on sleep and daily activities. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, sudden worsening, or swelling near the eye. Long duration is a reason for review, not proof of a particular cause.

Ask whether the diagnosis still fits, what pattern or trigger should be monitored, whether testing is useful, and how maintenance care differs from flare treatment.
