What should you know about folliculitis dermoscopy?

A dermatologist may use a handheld dermoscope over bumps, redness, crusting, or pustules. The view can reveal whether changes are centred on individual follicles, whether hairs are trapped or growing inward, and whether the pattern looks more consistent with irritation or infection. Dermoscopy does not replace the history and ordinary skin examination. The clinician may also consider the location, itch, tenderness, shaving habits, products, sweating, and how quickly the area changed.

Folliculitis can appear on the scalp, face, trunk, buttocks, or shaved areas. Similar bumps may have other causes, so a magnified pattern is one part of the assessment rather than a diagnosis by itself.

Before the visit, avoid picking or squeezing the bumps and make a note of recent hair removal, friction, tight clothing, new products, or shared towels. Keep the area gently cleansed and dry. Do not start leftover antibiotics or steroid creams without advice, because the useful treatment depends on the cause. If a clinician identifies a bacterial component, treatment may include a prescribed topical option or an oral medicine; irritation or another follicle disorder may need a different approach.

Arrange medical assessment if the rash is spreading, repeatedly returning, painful, draining, or leaving scars or dark marks. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly increasing redness, marked swelling, severe pain, or feeling unwell. These features can signal a deeper or more extensive infection and should not be judged by appearance alone.

Ask whether the pattern is follicle-centred, what alternatives were considered, and whether a swab or other test is needed. Clarify which shaving, skin-care, or hair-care changes are sensible and how long to use any prescribed treatment.
