What should you know about folliculitis demodex?

Demodex are tiny organisms that can live in hair follicles and oil glands. Their presence does not by itself establish that they are causing symptoms. When follicle inflammation is suspected, people may notice itching, rough texture, small bumps, redness or colour change, burning, or irritation around the face and sometimes the eyelashes. Similar features can occur with contact irritation, acne, rosacea, ingrown hairs, or other forms of folliculitis, so an examination matters.

Use a mild cleanser, avoid scrubbing and picking, and pause new fragranced or heavy products while the skin is unsettled. Keep pillowcases, towels, makeup tools, and spectacles clean, and avoid sharing face products. Do not use animal or household insect products on skin. A clinician may inspect the follicles and select targeted treatment; ordinary antibiotics for skin infection are not automatically the right answer when the cause is uncertain.

Arrange an appointment if facial bumps or itching persist, recur, affect the eyelids, or do not respond to gentle care. Seek prompt assessment for eye pain, vision change, marked eyelid swelling, pus, rapidly spreading inflammation, or fever. Bring a list of products and medicines because recent changes can help separate irritation from follicle disease.
