What should you know about folliculitis dark skin?

Folliculitis is inflammation around a hair follicle. On deeper skin tones, redness can be subtle or absent, while swelling, tenderness, itching, pus, or a change in texture may be more noticeable. After the active inflammation settles, the area may remain darker or lighter than the surrounding skin. This colour change is not proof that infection is still active, and it can take time to fade.

Cleanse gently, avoid scrubbing, and stop shaving or waxing over active bumps. Reduce rubbing from tight clothing and do not pick or squeeze lesions, because injury can deepen inflammation and increase post-inflammatory colour change. Use sun protection on exposed areas to reduce darkening after inflammation. A clinician can distinguish folliculitis from ingrown hairs, acne, or another cause and choose topical antibiotic therapy or other treatment when appropriate.

Book an assessment when bumps are painful, spreading, repeatedly returning, draining, or leaving expanding areas of colour change. Seek urgent help for fever, rapidly spreading warmth or swelling, severe pain, eye-area involvement, or feeling unwell. Ask for review if a mark changes without a clear healing pattern or a spot remains firm and unusual.
