Folliculitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus

Staphylococcus aureus is a bacterium that can live on skin without causing illness, but it may trigger inflammation when follicles are opened by shaving, rubbing, scratching, or moisture. The result may be small red bumps, pustules, tenderness, or crusting around hairs. It can occur on the face, neck, trunk, buttocks, or shaved areas. A clinician may diagnose it from the appearance and course; testing or a swab can be considered when the infection is recurrent or treatment has not worked.

Keep the area clean and dry, wash hands after touching it, and avoid squeezing lesions. Stop sharing towels, razors, and clothing until the problem is resolved. A clinician may prescribe a topical antibiotic for limited disease or an oral antibiotic when the infection is more widespread or deeper. Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed and report a new rash, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or severe diarrhoea promptly.

Contact a clinician if bumps are painful, spreading, repeatedly returning, or leaving draining areas. Seek urgent assessment for fever, chills, rapidly expanding redness, red streaks, severe swelling, or feeling very unwell. Extra caution is appropriate if you have reduced immunity, diabetes, or a wound near the eyes.
