Folliculitis after a bikini wax: what to know

Folliculitis after a bikini wax is inflammation or infection around hair follicles caused by irritation, friction, or bacterial entry. Small red or tender bumps may appear where hairs were removed, and some contain pus or itch. Waxing can disturb the skin barrier and create friction while follicles settle.

A few bumps soon after waxing may reflect temporary irritation, ingrown hairs, or folliculitis. Folliculitis affects the follicles rather than the vaginal canal. Sweat, tight clothing, repeated rubbing, and touching the area can keep inflammation active. Darker marks can remain after the bumps flatten, especially if the skin is picked.

Pause waxing, shaving, scrubs, fragranced products, and vigorous exfoliation until the skin has recovered. Gently wash the external skin, pat it dry, and choose loose, breathable underwear. A warm, clean compress may soothe discomfort. Do not squeeze, lance, or pull at bumps; these actions can deepen irritation and spread bacteria.

If lesions persist, recur, or drain, arrange a dermatology assessment. Treatment depends on the cause and can include a prescribed topical medicine or, when appropriate, oral antibiotics.
