What should you know about focal mastitis treatment?

Mastitis affects breast tissue and may cause a tender, warm, swollen, or reddened area. It can occur during breastfeeding when milk removal is difficult, but it is not limited to that setting. A focal area may feel firm and may be painful when touched. Some episodes are driven mainly by inflammation; bacterial infection can also occur. During breastfeeding, continue gentle feeding or expressing according to comfort; avoid forceful massage and excessive pumping, which can worsen swelling.
