Short answer

A focal convulsion is a seizure in which rhythmic jerking starts in one body area and awareness may change.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Starting point
One region of the brain
Possible sign
Repeated movement on one side
Key observation
Time the event and note responsiveness

What it means

Electrical activity begins in one part of the brain rather than involving the whole brain immediately. A face, hand, arm, or leg can twitch repeatedly, sometimes spreading to nearby areas. The person may describe an unusual feeling beforehand, remain responsive, or become unable to respond normally. A convulsion can have different causes, so the circumstances, medicines, illness, sleep, alcohol use, and blood glucose all help clinicians assess it.

What to do

Keep the person away from traffic, stairs, heat, and furniture edges. Place something soft under the head and remove glasses. Do not hold the body still or place objects between the teeth. Time the event, observe which side moves, and stay nearby. Once the jerking stops and breathing is normal, place the person on their side and reassure them as they recover.

When to seek care

Get emergency help for a seizure lasting five minutes or longer, repeated seizures without a return to normal, breathing difficulty, a major injury, pregnancy, or an episode in water. Fever with a stiff neck, severe headache, new weakness, or possible low blood glucose also requires urgent care. A first convulsion should be medically assessed promptly.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the pattern suggests a focal seizure, what tests may identify a cause, and whether medication is needed. Ask for personalised advice about driving, sleep, alcohol, work at heights, and what information witnesses should record.

Questions people ask

Is every focal convulsion epilepsy?

No. A convulsion may have an immediate cause, and one event alone does not diagnose epilepsy.

What should a witness record?

Record the start time, body parts involved, responsiveness, breathing, spread of movement, and recovery.
