What should you know about an FNA biopsy needle?

Fine-needle aspiration, or FNA, is commonly used for a lump or an area seen on imaging. A clinician cleans the skin, may numb it, and guides the needle into the target; ultrasound or another imaging method can help with placement. Suction draws cells into the needle, and a pathologist examines them. The sample may show benign cells, malignant cells, inflammation or too few cells for a firm conclusion. FNA is a cell sample, so it does not always provide the same structural detail as a larger tissue biopsy.

Tell the team about blood-thinning medicines, bleeding disorders, allergies and pregnancy. Follow instructions about eating, drinking and medicines; do not stop a prescribed medicine without guidance. Keep the site clean as advised and expect possible tenderness or a small bruise. Results may lead to further testing, such as Immunohistochemistry or Genomic Tumour Profiling, when the cell features need more detail. An MRI Scan may be used to assess the target or surrounding anatomy, but it does not replace the laboratory assessment.

Contact the procedure team for bleeding that does not settle with pressure, increasing swelling, worsening pain, spreading redness, pus or fever. Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, sudden weakness or rapidly enlarging swelling, particularly after a sample from the neck or chest. The urgency depends on the symptom and procedure site, not on whether the lump is cancerous.

Ask why FNA is suitable for the target, whether imaging guidance will be used, when the pathology report is expected, what an inadequate sample would mean, and whether a tissue biopsy or additional marker testing could be needed.
