What should you know about flucloxacillin folliculitis?

Folliculitis is inflammation around a hair follicle and can look like small red bumps, pustules, or tender spots. Friction, shaving, blocked follicles, and ingrown hairs can contribute; bacteria are only one possible cause. A clinician may prescribe flucloxacillin when the examination suggests a bacterial skin infection that this antibiotic is suitable for.

Itchy scalp, Pimples, or Skin Bumps can resemble folliculitis but may need different care. Treatment choice depends on the site, spread, drainage, medical history, and whether a culture or another test is useful.

Take flucloxacillin exactly as prescribed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes it. Follow the instructions about timing with food, and mention penicillin allergy, pregnancy, liver problems, or other medicines before starting. Do not use leftover capsules or give them to another person.

Wash gently, avoid picking, and pause shaving or tight clothing over the affected area. A clinician may instead recommend Topical Antibiotic Therapy or another approach when the area is limited or the cause is not bacterial.

Get urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, or a severe blistering or peeling rash after a dose. Contact a clinician if redness spreads, pain increases, fever develops, pus collects, or the area is not improving as expected. Severe or persistent diarrhoea during or after antibiotics also needs medical advice.
