Flu mRNA vaccine

Messenger RNA is a short-lived set of instructions used by cells. After vaccination, cells use the instructions briefly to produce a target recognised by the immune system; the mRNA is then broken down. It does not enter the cell nucleus or alter genetic material, and it does not contain live influenza virus.

The immune response may cause a sore arm, tiredness, headache, muscle aches, or a mild temperature for a short time. Protection is not immediate, and vaccination does not treat an illness already under way.

Seek advice for a reaction that is worsening, unusual, or not settling. Emergency symptoms such as chest pain, severe breathlessness, or new confusion need immediate assessment regardless of vaccination.
