What should you know about flu like symptoms mastitis?

Mastitis is inflammation in the breast. It may develop during breastfeeding when milk flow is disrupted, pressure builds, or the breast becomes irritated; infection can also be involved. One breast may feel hot, swollen, tender, or reddened, while the wider inflammatory response produces feverishness and aches.

Flu-like symptoms with breast pain deserve attention, particularly if they are worsening. Mastitis is not a reason to stop breastfeeding automatically, and a lactation assessment can help identify positioning, attachment, or milk-removal problems.

Rest, drink to thirst, use comfortable support, and continue feeding or expressing in a way that does not cause forceful over-emptying. A cool pack may ease swelling. Avoid deep massage and harsh pressure. Arrange medical advice if symptoms do not start improving or if infection is suspected; treatment may include prescribed medicine.

Seek prompt care for a high or persistent fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, pus, marked weakness, confusion, or a breast swelling that feels like a collection. Urgent assessment is also needed if you are unable to keep fluids down or feel faint.
