Flu chills without fever

Shivering can happen before a temperature rises, after it falls, or when a reading misses a brief change. Influenza may cause chills with cough, fatigue, headache, and aches even when the thermometer is normal. Other possibilities include a Common Cold, low blood sugar, medication effects, anxiety, or an infection with local symptoms. A Kidney Infection or Urinary Tract Infection may cause chills with urinary or side pain; Pneumonia may cause cough and breathing symptoms. Dengue Fever and Malaria require attention after relevant travel.

Take your temperature with a reliable thermometer when chills begin and again if you feel hot. Rest, drink regularly, eat if able, and use a light layer for comfort. Avoid overheating under heavy bedding. Do not start antibiotics left from a previous illness. If you use paracetamol or another medicine, follow the label and ask a pharmacist about interactions, pregnancy, liver or kidney disease, and medicines for children. Write down timing, duration, travel, urinary symptoms, cough, pain, and any rash.

Get emergency help for confusion, fainting, severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, a seizure, cold clammy skin, or sudden deterioration. Arrange prompt care for repeated intense shaking, severe weakness, persistent vomiting, a stiff neck, new rash, severe abdominal or side pain, painful urination, or very little urine. Absence of fever does not make these warning signs harmless, especially in infants, older adults, pregnant people, or those with reduced immunity.
