Flu chills: causes and warning signs

Chills are a sensation of cold with shivering or trembling, often occurring when the body is raising its internal temperature. Influenza may cause chills alongside fever, aches, headache, cough, and fatigue. Chills can also accompany infections affecting the lungs, urinary tract, kidneys, or bloodstream. Dengue Fever and Malaria are relevant after certain travel or mosquito exposure. The pattern matters: painful urination, a cough with breathlessness, flank pain, rash, or sudden deterioration points toward different needs for assessment.

Check your temperature, rest, and drink small amounts often. Use a light blanket while shivering, then remove layers if you become hot or sweaty. Paracetamol can reduce discomfort when suitable and used according to its label; ask a pharmacist if you have chronic illness, take other medicines, or are caring for a child. Do not place very hot items directly against skin. Note when chills began, how long they last, and any urinary, respiratory, abdominal, or neurological symptoms.

Seek emergency help for confusion, fainting, severe breathlessness, blue lips, cold clammy skin, a seizure, or a rapidly worsening condition. Prompt assessment is needed for repeated rigors, severe pain, persistent vomiting, a stiff neck, a new rash, very little urine, or fever after relevant travel. These signs can occur with Pneumonia, Kidney Infection, Sepsis, or other infections and should not be judged by chills alone.
