It may help explain blood in the urine, changes in urinary flow, repeated irritation, or an area seen on earlier imaging. The clinician can check the bladder lining for inflammation, stones, narrowing, or a suspicious patch.

A finding that looks unusual can be associated with Bladder Cancer, but cystoscopy alone is not a final diagnosis. Your team may recommend a tissue sample, urine test, or follow-up examination depending on what they see and your symptoms.

Share a complete medicine list, especially blood thinners, and mention allergies, urinary infection symptoms, or previous urethral procedures. Follow the clinic’s instructions about drinking and medication. Emptying your bladder when asked may help the examination start comfortably.

The scope is flexible, but pressure or an urge to urinate is still possible as fluid enters the bladder. Afterwards, mild discomfort and a small amount of blood may occur. Use the care instructions supplied by the clinic and plan time to rest if the area feels irritated.

Speak with the care team if discomfort or bleeding is increasing, or if you notice fever, chills, worsening pain, cloudy or unpleasant-smelling urine, or marked difficulty passing urine. Urgent assessment is needed for severe pain, heavy bleeding, or complete inability to urinate.

Ask what prompted the test, whether the prostate or urethra may affect the examination, whether a biopsy is planned, how soon results are available, and which aftercare symptoms should prompt a call.
