Flat Warts on Legs: What to Know

Flat warts may look like smooth, slightly raised spots that are close to the surrounding skin colour or somewhat pink or brown. They can occur in clusters on the thighs or lower legs. Friction, scratching and shaving can move infected skin cells to nearby areas.

A wart is not the only explanation for a flat leg lesion. Folliculitis, moles, scars and other growths can resemble one. Examination is especially useful when the surface is rough, the colour is uneven, or the mark is changing or symptomatic.

Keep fingernails short, wash hands after touching the area and do not share towels, razors or grooming tools. Use a separate razor for unaffected skin, and avoid shaving directly over visible lesions. Cover a spot that catches on clothing, but let the skin stay dry and clean.

After diagnosis, a clinician may discuss imiquimod treatment, cryotherapy, electrosurgery or wart removal. The choice depends on the number and location of lesions, skin tone, previous treatment and the possibility of temporary irritation or pigment change.

Book a review if the spots spread quickly, become sore, bleed, crust repeatedly or fail to improve after treatment. Prompt assessment is sensible for a mark that looks different from the rest, or if you have diabetes, reduced immunity or a history of slow wound healing.
