What should you know about a flat skin tag?

Skin tags, also called acrochordons or fibroepithelial polyps, are usually soft, flesh-coloured growths that form where skin rubs against skin or clothing. A growth that looks flat, feels firm, has an unusual colour, or is changing may be something else, so identification matters before treatment.

Some small skin tags have a short or broad attachment and can look less raised when viewed from the side. However, a flat mark may also be a mole, wart, seborrhoeic keratosis, scar, or another type of lesion. Colour, texture, border, duration, and change over time help a clinician distinguish among these possibilities.

Skin tags commonly occur around the neck, underarms, eyelids, groin, or beneath the breasts, where friction is frequent. They are often harmless, but a new or changing lesion should not be diagnosed from a photograph or removed at home.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if you are unsure whether the lesion is a skin tag. The clinician may examine it closely and ask when it appeared, whether it catches on clothing, and whether it has bled or changed. Do not cut, tie off, burn, or apply wart-removal products to an unconfirmed lesion; these methods can cause bleeding, infection, scarring, or delayed diagnosis.

If it is confirmed as a skin tag and removal is wanted because of irritation or appearance, options can include snipping, freezing, or using electrical energy. The choice depends on the lesion's size, attachment, location, and your skin-healing history. Follow the aftercare instructions and avoid picking at the treated area while it heals.

Seek a prompt clinical review if the spot is rapidly changing, repeatedly bleeding, persistently painful, ulcerated, very dark, or developing an irregular edge. Arrange assessment sooner if it becomes inflamed without clear friction or if several new unusual growths appear. These features do not identify a specific diagnosis, but they make an in-person examination more important.

You could ask: Does this look like a skin tag or another lesion? Does it need monitoring or removal? Which method suits its location and attachment? What wound care should I follow, and which changes should prompt a review? Tell the clinician about medicines that affect bleeding, past keloid or raised-scar formation, and any previous reaction to local anaesthetic.
