Flat seborrheic keratosis: what to know

These growths can be tan, brown, or darker, with a smooth, waxy, or slightly rough surface. A flat one may look more like a patch than a raised growth, and several can appear in different areas. A clinician looks at its borders, color, texture, and evolution because other pigmented lesions can resemble it. Sudden change, persistent bleeding, or marked asymmetry should not be assumed to be a harmless seborrheic keratosis.

Do not scrape, burn, or apply unverified wart products at home. If the diagnosis is clear and the growth catches on clothing, becomes irritated, or is cosmetically bothersome, a dermatologist may discuss cryotherapy, curettage and cautery, or electrosurgery. The method depends on thickness, site, color, and the need to preserve surrounding skin. Healing can include temporary redness, crusting, or a change in pigmentation.
