Flat red spots on skin: what they may mean

A spot may come from irritation after a new product, friction, shaving, heat, or sun exposure. Other possibilities include acne-related inflammation, folliculitis around hairs, rosacea, or perioral dermatitis near the mouth. Color alone cannot identify the cause. Note whether the area fades when pressed, feels warm, becomes raised, forms scale, or changes after stopping a suspected trigger.

Take a clear photo in natural light and record when the spots appeared, where they started, and any new cosmetics, medicines, exercise, or hair removal. Use a gentle cleanser, avoid scrubbing and picking, and pause newly introduced fragranced products. A clinician can compare the pattern with conditions such as acne, folliculitis, or rosacea and discuss suitable care; LED Light Therapy may be considered only when it matches the diagnosed problem.

Seek urgent medical care if the spots appear suddenly with trouble breathing, facial swelling, faintness, fever, severe illness, blistering, or widespread peeling. Arrange a prompt assessment if they do not settle, spread, bleed, become painful, or involve the eyes. A changing pattern deserves examination even when the spots are small.
