What should you know about flat light brown melanoma?

Melanoma is a cancer of pigment-producing skin cells. It may begin as a flat patch with tan, brown, black, pink, red, blue, or white areas, and one lesion can contain several shades. Uneven halves, an irregular edge, or a mark that looks unlike your other moles can be useful warning clues. A photograph cannot confirm melanoma; examination and removal or sampling of suspicious tissue are used for diagnosis.

Arrange a prompt dermatology appointment for a new or changing light-brown mark, especially if it grows, develops new colours, bleeds, crusts, or repeatedly itches. Note when you first noticed it and photograph it beside a ruler for comparison, without delaying care. If melanoma is confirmed, treatment planning may include surgical excision, skin cancer surgery, or tumour removal surgery. Some people also need a sentinel lymph node biopsy or medicines such as immunotherapy, depending on the findings.

Seek prompt review for a lesion that is changing over weeks or months, has a new irregular border, or differs clearly from your other marks. Arrange urgent medical advice for persistent bleeding, ulceration, marked pain, or a rapidly changing lesion. New neurological symptoms after a melanoma diagnosis, such as a severe unusual headache, weakness, confusion, or seizure, need urgent care.
