Right-sided flank pain under the ribs: what to know

The area beneath the right ribs includes the lower ribs and back muscles, the right kidney, and upper abdominal structures. Pain that changes with twisting or pressing may be musculoskeletal, whereas colicky pain with nausea or urinary changes can occur with a kidney stone. Kidney infection can present with flank pain alongside fever, chills, or painful urination. A urinary tract infection may cause urgency or burning and should be checked if discomfort reaches the side.

Record whether meals, movement, deep breathing, urination, or lying down affects it. Location alone cannot identify the cause.

Avoid lifting and movements that reproduce the pain. Try a comfortable position and mild warmth if the skin is protected. Drink normally unless a clinician has given you a fluid limit. Seek advice before taking anti-inflammatory medicine if you have kidney or stomach problems, are pregnant, or use medicines that affect bleeding. Arrange review when pain remains unexplained or keeps returning.

Get urgent assessment for severe or worsening right-sided pain, fever, repeated vomiting, yellowing of the skin or eyes, black stools, blood in urine, or inability to pass urine. Emergency help is appropriate for fainting, severe breathing difficulty, chest pressure, or a rigid and very tender abdomen.

Ask whether the rib area, kidney, or another abdominal structure needs examination; whether urine or blood tests are appropriate; and which symptoms should send you to urgent care. Mention recent injury, exercise, meals, medicines, and pregnancy possibility.
