Flank Pain and Bloating: What to Know

Gas, constipation, food intolerance, or a temporary bowel upset can create pressure that is felt in the side or back. Bowel-related discomfort may shift, improve after passing stool or gas, or follow meals. Flank pain that is severe, fixed, or wave-like may instead reflect a urinary problem such as kidney stones. Fever, burning urine, or feeling unwell raises concern for infection rather than simple bloating.

Notice links with meals, bowel movements, and urination. Gentle walking can support bowel movement, and smaller meals may reduce swallowed air while symptoms settle. Drink normally and avoid foods that clearly trigger gas for you. Do not assume bloating explains pain that keeps worsening. Arrange medical advice if symptoms persist, recur frequently, or are accompanied by a new urinary change.

Get urgent medical help for severe or rapidly increasing pain, a swollen or rigid abdomen, repeated vomiting, fever, faintness, inability to pass stool or gas, inability to urinate, or blood in urine or stool. Prompt assessment is also needed if the pain follows an injury or you feel acutely unwell.
