Flank Area Pain: Causes, Checks and Warning Signs

The flank area lies along the side of the body between the lower ribs and the upper hip, with the back included in some descriptions. Surface tenderness after exercise, lifting or coughing can point toward muscles or ribs. Deeper pain that pulses or comes in waves may occur with kidney stones. A kidney infection can present with flank pain plus fever, chills, nausea or urinary symptoms. Urinary urgency and burning may occur with a urinary tract infection.
