What should you know about flaky scalp from sunburn?

Sun exposure can leave exposed scalp skin red, warm, tender and later flaky. Peeling is the skin shedding damaged surface cells, not a sign that the skin should be scrubbed clean. A sunburn can be easy to miss beneath hair, particularly along a parting or at a thinning hairline. If flakes began without recent sun exposure, or continue after the burn settles, consider other causes such as dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis or scalp psoriasis. Scaly areas with broken hairs or hair loss need assessment for scalp ringworm.

Stay out of direct sun and cover the scalp with a loose, breathable hat when outdoors. Cool the skin with a damp cloth, wash gently and avoid picking, peeling or applying irritating fragranced products. Drink fluids and use a simple moisturising product only if it is suitable for the scalp and does not sting. Do not put ice directly on the skin. Once healed, use shade and appropriate scalp sun protection, including attention to the parting and hairline.

Get prompt medical advice for extensive blistering, severe pain, marked swelling, dizziness, vomiting, confusion or fever. Arrange a review if blisters break, redness spreads, pus develops, or the scalp becomes increasingly warm and tender. Persistent scale, recurring itch or new hair loss after the burn has resolved may signal a separate scalp condition.
