What should you know about flaky scalp eczema?

Eczema can cause itch, dryness, redness and fine scale. It may affect the hairline, behind the ears or the neck, especially after exposure to fragranced products, hair dye or other irritants. Seborrheic dermatitis can also affect oily areas of the scalp and may produce yellowish scale. Scalp psoriasis tends to form thicker, more sharply outlined plaques. Scalp ringworm may cause scaling alongside broken hairs or a patch of hair loss. Because these conditions overlap, flakes alone cannot confirm eczema.

Stop any newly introduced dye, fragrance or styling product if the irritation began after using it. Cleanse with lukewarm water and avoid rubbing or peeling the scale. Keep fingernails short to limit skin damage from scratching. Use only products recommended for the scalp, since creams or oils that suit another body area may worsen buildup or irritation in hair. A dermatologist can select treatment for inflammation and explain whether medicated shampoo therapy is appropriate.

Arrange an appointment if the scalp is repeatedly itchy, cracked, oozing or bleeding, or if symptoms began after hair dye and do not settle when it is stopped. Seek prompt care for painful swelling, pus, fever, tender glands or patchy hair loss. Early assessment is especially useful when a child has scaling and broken hairs, because infection needs different treatment from eczema.
