What should you know about flaky crusty scalp?

Dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis can leave scale that sticks together, especially when oil and hair products collect on the scalp. Scalp psoriasis can produce thick plaques with tightly adherent scale. Scratching can create small breaks that dry into crust. Scalp ringworm may cause scaling, broken hairs, tender inflammation, or a boggy swollen area, which needs different treatment from ordinary dandruff.

Soften loose scale with gentle washing and let water do the work; do not peel crusts off with nails or a comb. Avoid alcohol-based products, harsh scrubs, dyes, and tight hairstyles until the skin settles. Do not share brushes, hats, or towels. A medicated shampoo can help some flaky conditions, but an inflamed or infected scalp may require a clinician’s treatment plan.

Arrange prompt assessment for yellow or bloody crust, pus, marked tenderness, swelling, fever, a bad smell, broken hairs, or a widening area of hair loss. Seek urgent advice if swelling is severe or pain is rapidly increasing. Recurrent crusting should be examined even when it is not very itchy.

Ask whether the crust is dry scale, dried fluid, or infection; whether the follicles or hair shafts are affected; and whether you should use a medicated shampoo, prescription cream, or another treatment.
