What should you know about flakes on newborn scalp?

Newborn scalp scale may be part of cradle cap, a common form of seborrheic dermatitis. It can look white, yellow, or greasy and may sit close to the scalp without making the baby unwell. Dry skin and irritation from products can also cause flaking. Scalp psoriasis is less common in this setting, while scalp ringworm is unusual in newborns but needs attention if there are broken hairs, a tender patch, or spreading scale. Appearance and the baby’s behaviour matter more than the flakes alone.

Wash with a mild baby cleanser and use lukewarm water. If scale is stuck, ask a healthcare professional whether a small amount of plain emollient before washing is suitable, then loosen it gently with a soft brush. Never pick, scratch, or pull at attached scale. Avoid adult dandruff products, essential oils, fragranced treatments, and medicated shampoo unless a clinician specifically recommends them for your baby. Keep nails short to reduce injury from scratching.

Contact a healthcare professional if the scalp is very red, swollen, wet, bleeding, crusted, painful, or has a bad smell. Seek prompt advice if the baby has fever, seems unusually sleepy, feeds poorly, or the rash spreads beyond the scalp. Arrange an examination for patchy hair loss or scale that does not improve with gentle care.

Ask whether the appearance fits cradle cap, whether any emollient is appropriate, and which baby-safe cleanser to use. Mention when the flakes began, products used, skin changes elsewhere, scratching, and any change in feeding or behaviour.
