What should you know about fissure skin tag treatment?

Skin tags are soft growths that can rub against clothing, jewellery, or nearby skin. Repeated friction may make a tag sore, split, or bleed. Twisting around its narrow base can also cause tenderness and a darker colour. A lesion that looks like a skin tag may instead be a wart, mole, cyst, or another growth, so visual self-diagnosis is unreliable.

A clinician will consider its size, attachment, colour, surface, symptoms, and recent changes. Tell them if it catches repeatedly, became painful, bleeds without rubbing, or has developed crusting or discharge.

Until it is assessed, reduce rubbing, keep the area clean and dry, and avoid cutting, tying off, or burning the tag at home. Home removal can cause bleeding, infection, scarring, and confusion about a changing lesion.

If removal is appropriate, a clinician may use a procedure selected for the lesion and body site. Cryotherapy freezes tissue; electrosurgery uses controlled heat; simple removal may be considered for a projecting tag. Aftercare can include keeping the site clean, protecting it from friction, and watching for delayed redness or discharge.
