Fish skin graft healed: what happens next

Healing means the surface has closed and no longer has an open area that needs the original wound covering. It does not mean the skin has immediately regained its former strength or appearance. The area may be pink, brown, pale, shiny, firm, softer than nearby skin, itchy, numb, or sensitive. Hair growth and sweating can also differ when deeper skin structures were affected. A clinician should confirm that the surface is healed before you change dressings or begin scar products.

A mature scar may flatten and soften gradually, while some scars remain raised, tight, or noticeable. Movement can feel restricted when a scar crosses a joint, so rehabilitation advice may be part of recovery.

Use a bland moisturiser only when the treating team says the skin barrier is ready, and massage or silicone care only with their instructions. Protect the area from friction, picking, hot water, and unapproved products. Cover it from strong sunlight with clothing or clinician-approved protection because recently healed skin can darken or become irritated. Keep attending reviews if the team is tracking scar thickness, movement, sensation, or function.

Arrange medical review if the surface reopens, develops a new blister, becomes increasingly painful, hot, swollen, or red, or produces drainage or an unpleasant smell. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, rapidly spreading redness with fever, severe loss of movement, or signs of a serious allergic reaction. A new lump or persistent change within a scar also deserves assessment rather than repeated rubbing or home treatment.

Ask whether the graft is fully healed, which moisturiser or scar treatment is suitable, when massage can begin, how to protect the site outdoors, and whether therapy is needed for tightness or reduced movement.
