Fish skin graft before and after: what to expect

Before treatment, the wound is examined for depth, contamination, bleeding, and signs of infection. The team may clean it and remove unhealthy tissue before choosing a processed fish-skin material. After placement, the graft works as a protective scaffold or covering while the body repairs the area. Early photographs may show redness, swelling, moisture, or a visible dressing; these do not by themselves predict the final appearance.

As healing progresses, new skin can look pink, darker, lighter, shiny, or uneven. Texture and colour may continue changing after the surface has closed. A skin graft plan is individual, and a graft may be one part of care rather than the entire treatment.

Follow the dressing instructions exactly, keep the site protected from rubbing and soaking, and wash your hands before touching nearby skin. Do not pull away material, trim edges, scratch, or apply creams unless the treating team approves them. Keep follow-up appointments so the clinician can inspect the graft and donor or surrounding skin. Once the surface has healed and your clinician allows it, protect the area from sun and moisturise as advised.

Contact the treating service promptly for worsening rather than settling pain, increasing warmth or swelling, spreading redness, pus-like or foul-smelling drainage, fever, bleeding that does not settle with advised pressure, or a graft or dressing that lifts unexpectedly. Emergency help is needed for severe bleeding, breathing trouble, faintness, or rapidly worsening illness.

Ask how the wound will be prepared, where the graft material will sit, how often the dressing changes, what the donor area needs, when bathing and exercise are allowed, and how later scar care will be introduced.
